my first formal training was in watercolor;; chinese watercolor to be specific.. 5 years starting as a youth when about ten years old.. was old school in the apprentice way of things.. it taught me about the meditative process,, the way to get a line,, the way to get life into the painting;; that there is an abstraction which looks to evoke feeling and presence of mind in the activity of painting;; and hopefully that of the viewer as well.. these lessons stay with me now even as i go further into the non figurative progressively.. and the further i go into the non-figurative and abstract,, the more appropriate my apprenticeship makes sense..
my media of choice is very liquid.. it includes acrylic,, enamel,, ink,, and the occasional pencil and charcoal.. these fluid media allow me to be responsive and reactive more that imposing myself into the work.. the activity of painting is not imposed,, but instead a moment of attentiveness and alertness as i approach the work.. it by no means passive though.. there is an immense level of thought and study before paintings are acted on.. but when approached it is definitive with no turning back..
the works are generally centered around an idea of time,, reaction to experience,, and how to move forward to those experiences.. they are not stills and moments in time but instead about this continuous flow of space,, time,, and events that make me what i am;; or perhaps what i am becoming.. it looks to show a sense of timelessness,, but not in the usual sense of always acceptable;; but rather instead and idea of how time may alter the way in which we approach each moment in life,, without turning back and moving forward with it..
that is why my choice of medium is liquid..!!

beauty is not a product..
though maybe pleasing to our mind..
nor presents itself as something that’s necessarily beautiful..
not necessarily even pleasurable..
in painting,, its about the experience..
it’s about experiencing the painting..
a neural recognition of the act..
as if we were there..
balance,, rhythm;; maybe remembrance..??
even non figurative becomes cognizant..
so our perception becomes a reality that is new..
so painting is about something new;; never seen before..
but somehow we know it.
